Brevard County commissioners moved a step closer to a final budget this week, tentatively backing a spending plan that directs new dollars toward road resurfacing and stormwater projects designed to reduce nutrient pollution flowing into the Indian River Lagoon.
Dozens of residents signed up to speak during the workshop, with many urging the board to prioritize the ailing lagoon. Others pressed commissioners on growth, traffic and the pace of new development across the county's fast-growing central corridor.
A final vote on the budget is expected later this summer, following an additional round of public hearings.
